You avoid registration holds that keep your trucks off the road. You sidestep fines that can hit $10,000 per vehicle per day. You keep your fleet moving without surprise shutdowns or last-minute scrambles to find a credentialed tester.
CARB’s Clean Truck Check program isn’t going away. Starting in 2027, testing jumps from twice a year to four times. That means more pressure, tighter windows, and higher stakes if you’re not prepared.
When you stay ahead of your compliance deadlines, you protect your operating authority in California. You avoid the stress of DMV notices and enforcement actions. You keep your drivers on schedule and your customers happy. That’s what matters when you’re trying to run a business, not chase paperwork.
All SMOG Motors is a CARB credentialed testing facility serving Desert Edge, CA and the surrounding area. We’re certified to perform Clean Truck Check testing on model year 2013 and newer trucks with a GVWR over 14,000 pounds.
We don’t do passenger cars. We don’t do light-duty vehicles. We focus exclusively on heavy-duty diesel and alternative fuel trucks that fall under California’s HD I/M program.
Our testers have completed CARB’s official training and passed the credentialing exam. We use CARB-approved OBD testing devices. We submit your results directly to the state database so your compliance record stays current. If you operate trucks in Desert Edge or anywhere in California, you need a testing partner who knows the regulations inside and out—and that’s what we do.
You schedule your test within the 90-day window before your compliance deadline. Bring your truck in, and we’ll connect a CARB-approved OBD scanner to your vehicle’s diagnostic port.
The scanner pulls data from your engine’s onboard diagnostics system. We’re checking for emissions-related fault codes, readiness monitors, and other parameters CARB requires. The test itself takes minutes—not hours like older inspection methods.
If your truck passes, we submit the results to CARB’s database immediately. You get a certificate of compliance, and your vehicle stays clear with the DMV. If there’s an issue, we’ll walk you through what needs attention and what your options are.
You don’t need to guess about deadlines or wonder if your test was submitted correctly. We handle the technical side so you can focus on keeping your trucks working. That’s the process—straightforward, fast, and designed to keep you compliant without the runaround.

This service applies to diesel trucks with model year 2013 or newer engines and alternative fuel trucks with 2018 or newer engines—both with a GVWR over 14,000 pounds. If your truck operates in California and meets those specs, it’s subject to Clean Truck Check testing twice a year as of January 2025.
Desert Edge sits in a region where commercial trucking is a major part of the economy. You’ve got fleets running freight routes, construction trucks moving materials, and owner-operators hauling loads across state lines. All of those vehicles need to stay compliant or risk getting flagged by CARB enforcement.
When you come in for testing, we scan your OBD system, verify your truck’s emissions data, and submit a passing result to the state. You walk away with documentation that proves compliance. No guesswork. No hoping the DMV doesn’t send you a notice. Just clean records and legal operation in California’s freight market.
If your truck has a GVWR over 14,000 pounds and a diesel engine from model year 2013 or newer, it needs testing. Alternative fuel trucks with 2018 or newer engines also qualify. Lighter trucks and older models fall under different programs.
You can check your vehicle’s compliance status on CARB’s website using your VIN. The system will show your next deadline and whether you have a passing test on file. If you’re flagged or close to a deadline, you’ll need to schedule a test within 90 days to stay compliant.
Out-of-state trucks that operate in California are also subject to these rules. It doesn’t matter where your truck is registered—if it’s working in California, it has to meet CARB standards.
The DMV can place a registration hold on your vehicle. That means you can’t renew your registration until you submit a passing compliance test. You’ll also risk fines up to $10,000 per vehicle per day if you’re caught operating out of compliance.
If CARB flags your truck, you’ll get a Notice to Submit to Testing. You have 30 days from that notice to pass a test and submit the results. Missing that window can lead to enforcement action, including penalties and restrictions on operating in California.
The stakes are high because California is serious about reducing emissions from heavy-duty trucks. The state expects to prevent thousands of air-quality-related health issues over the next few decades, and enforcement is part of that plan.
Testing fees vary depending on the provider, but you’re also looking at CARB’s annual $31 program fee per vehicle. The bigger cost comes from downtime and potential repairs if your truck doesn’t pass.
Traditional inspection methods used to take one to three hours per vehicle, costing fleets anywhere from $300 to $900 in lost productivity. OBD-based testing is faster, but you still need to factor in scheduling, travel time, and any follow-up work if issues are found.
If your truck fails and needs repairs to pass, those costs can add up quickly. Annual compliance expenses—including testing, repairs, and downtime—can range from $2,500 to $4,500 per vehicle. That’s why staying on top of maintenance and testing within your 90-day window matters.
You can use any CARB credentialed testing facility in California. The results get submitted to the same state database no matter where you test. If you’re based in Desert Edge but your truck is on the road, you can stop at a certified tester wherever it’s convenient.
What matters is that the facility is credentialed by CARB and uses approved OBD testing equipment. Not all smog shops are set up for heavy-duty Clean Truck Check testing—many only handle passenger vehicles.
If you’re managing a fleet, it makes sense to find a local tester you trust. You’ll be coming back twice a year (or four times starting in 2027), so having a reliable partner in Desert Edge saves time and keeps your compliance process consistent.
Clean Truck Check is specifically for heavy-duty vehicles with a GVWR over 14,000 pounds. Regular smog checks apply to passenger cars and light-duty trucks. The testing methods, equipment, and regulations are completely different.
Clean Truck Check uses OBD scanning to pull emissions data directly from your truck’s engine computer. It’s faster and more focused on fault codes and readiness monitors. Traditional smog checks often involve tailpipe testing and visual inspections.
You can’t take your heavy-duty truck to a standard smog shop and expect them to handle Clean Truck Check. They need CARB credentialing, specialized training, and approved OBD devices. That’s why finding a facility that focuses on commercial trucks matters.
You can test up to 90 days before your compliance deadline. Testing earlier in that window gives you time to address any issues if your truck doesn’t pass. Waiting until the last minute puts you at risk if repairs are needed or if scheduling gets tight.
Most fleet operators build testing into their regular maintenance schedules. That way, trucks get checked when they’re already in the shop, and compliance becomes part of the routine instead of a last-minute emergency.
If you get a Notice to Submit to Testing from CARB, you only have 30 days to pass and submit results. Don’t wait for that notice. Check your deadlines, plan ahead, and keep your trucks clear with the state.
