Your truck sits, you lose money. It’s that simple.
If your semi truck or heavy-duty vehicle is model year 2013 or newer and has a GVWR over 14,000 pounds, California requires you to complete Clean Truck Check testing twice a year. Miss it, and the DMV blocks your registration. Keep operating anyway, and you’re looking at fines up to $10,000 per vehicle per day.
That’s not a scare tactic. That’s what CARB enforcement actually does.
We handle CARB diesel compliance testing the way it should be done—fast, accurate, and without pulling your trucks off the road. Our CARB credentialed testers come to your yard or job site in Pomona with certified OBD equipment. The scan takes less than five minutes. Results go straight to CARB. You get your compliance certificate, and your trucks stay on schedule.
No registration holds. No surprise penalties. No downtime eating into your revenue.
All SMOG Motors has been handling emissions testing in Southern California for years. We’re not new to CARB regulations or what’s at stake when your fleet needs to stay compliant.
Pomona sits right in the heart of California’s trucking corridor. You’ve got freight moving through the Inland Empire daily, and every one of those heavy-duty vehicles over 14,000 pounds needs to meet CARB HD I/M testing requirements. We’ve been CARB certified for Clean Truck Check since the program rolled out, and we’ve completed hundreds of inspections for fleets and owner-operators across Los Angeles County.
You’re not dealing with someone learning on the job. Our testers are credentialed, trained, and equipped with CARB-approved OBD testing devices that meet SAE J1667 specs. We know what CARB looks for, and we know how to get your trucks through without the runaround.
First, you schedule a time that works for you. We offer same-day appointments for most Pomona locations, and we come to your yard, terminal, or wherever your trucks are parked.
When we arrive, our CARB credentialed tester connects a certified OBD scanner to your truck’s diagnostic port. The scan pulls data directly from your engine’s onboard system—no guessing, no visual checks. For diesel engines model year 2013 and newer, or alternative fuel engines 2018 and newer, this OBD test is what CARB requires. It takes less than five minutes per vehicle.
Once the scan is complete, we transmit the results electronically to CARB. If your truck passes, you receive a valid Clean Truck Check compliance certificate on the spot. That certificate proves you’re good for the next six months.
If something flags during the scan, we’ll tell you exactly what needs attention before you can retest. You have up to 90 days before your compliance deadline to submit a passing test, so there’s time to make repairs if needed. But most trucks that are maintained properly pass on the first try.
Ready to get started?
You get a full OBD emissions scan using CARB-approved testing equipment. Our tester connects to your truck’s diagnostic system and pulls the data CARB requires to verify compliance with California’s heavy-duty vehicle emissions standards.
The test applies only to trucks that are model year 2013 or newer and have a GVWR over 14,000 pounds. Older trucks and lighter vehicles aren’t part of the Clean Truck Check program. If you’re running a mixed fleet in Pomona, we’ll make sure you’re only paying for the trucks that actually need testing.
After the scan, results are transmitted directly to CARB’s database. You don’t have to file paperwork or follow up with the state. If your truck is compliant, you get your certificate immediately. That certificate is what keeps your registration active and your trucks legal to operate on California roads.
We also handle fleet accounts. If you’re running two trucks or twenty, we’ll come out and test them all in one visit. Pricing drops for multi-vehicle testing, and we’ll work around your schedule to minimize any impact on your operations. Pomona has a high concentration of freight and logistics companies, and we’ve worked with enough of them to know that downtime costs you more than the test ever will.
You need to complete Clean Truck Check testing twice a year if your truck is model year 2013 or newer and has a GVWR over 14,000 pounds. CARB calls this semi-annual testing, and it’s mandatory for almost all diesel and alternative fuel heavy-duty vehicles operating in California.
Your compliance deadline is based on your vehicle’s registration renewal date. You can submit a passing test up to 90 days before that deadline, which gives you a window to get it done without scrambling at the last minute. If you miss the deadline, the DMV will block your registration renewal until you complete the test and submit proof of compliance.
This isn’t optional. CARB coordinates enforcement with the California Highway Patrol, and they’re actively checking trucks at weigh stations and roadside inspections. If you’re caught operating a non-compliant truck, you’re looking at fines that start at $1,000 per day per vehicle and can go as high as $10,000 per vehicle per day depending on the violation.
If your truck fails the OBD scan, you’ll get a report that shows exactly what triggered the failure. Most failures are tied to emissions system faults—things like a malfunctioning diesel particulate filter, issues with the exhaust gas recirculation system, or stored trouble codes that indicate your engine isn’t meeting CARB standards.
You’ll need to get those issues repaired before you can retest. The good news is that you have up to 90 days before your compliance deadline to submit a passing test, so there’s time to make repairs without losing your registration. Once the repairs are done, we can come back out and retest your truck.
CARB doesn’t mess around with heavy-duty emissions. These trucks are responsible for over half of California’s smog-causing pollution, even though they’re only 3% of vehicles on the road. That’s why the state is serious about enforcement. A failed test isn’t the end of the world, but ignoring it will cost you. Get it fixed, get retested, and keep your trucks compliant.
Yes. We bring the testing equipment to you—your yard, job site, terminal, or wherever your trucks are parked in Pomona. That’s the whole point of mobile Clean Truck Check service.
You don’t need to pull your trucks off a job or drive them to a testing facility. We schedule a time that works for you, show up with CARB-certified OBD equipment, and complete the testing on-site. For most locations in Los Angeles County, we can get to you same-day if you need it done fast.
Pomona is centrally located in the Inland Empire, and we work with fleets and owner-operators all over the area. If you’ve got multiple trucks, we’ll test them all in one visit. The OBD scan takes less than five minutes per vehicle, so even if you’re running a larger fleet, we’re not tying up your operation for hours. You stay productive, and your trucks stay compliant.
You need a Clean Truck Check if you operate a heavy-duty truck in California that’s model year 2013 or newer with a GVWR over 14,000 pounds. This includes almost all diesel and alternative fuel semi trucks, box trucks, and other commercial vehicles that meet those specs.
The program specifically targets OBD-equipped vehicles. For diesel engines, that means 2013 and newer. For alternative fuel engines like compressed natural gas, it’s 2018 and newer. If your truck has an onboard diagnostic system and weighs over 14,000 pounds, you’re in the program.
This applies to owner-operators, fleet operators, and trucking companies. It doesn’t matter if you’re running one truck or a hundred—if your vehicles meet the criteria and operate on California public roads, you need to comply. CARB estimates there are hundreds of thousands of trucks subject to this requirement statewide, and Pomona’s location in the freight corridor means you’re likely operating vehicles that fall under the rule.
Pricing depends on whether you’re testing a single truck or multiple vehicles. For individual trucks, most CARB credentialed testers in California charge between $150 and $250 per test. We offer fleet pricing that drops the per-vehicle cost when you’re testing two or more trucks at the same location.
On top of the test itself, CARB requires an annual compliance fee of $31.18 for 2025. That fee goes directly to the state, not to the testing provider. You pay it once per year per vehicle, and it’s separate from the cost of the actual OBD scan.
When you compare the cost of testing to the cost of non-compliance, it’s not even close. A single day of operating a non-compliant truck can result in a $1,000 fine. If CARB or CHP catches you during an inspection and determines you’ve been ignoring the requirement, fines can hit $10,000 per vehicle per day. Add in the fact that the DMV will block your registration and potentially keep your trucks off the road, and the cost of staying compliant is a no-brainer.
Your first Clean Truck Check emissions compliance test is tied to your vehicle’s registration renewal date. CARB started enforcing the testing requirement on October 1, 2024, with the first compliance deadline hitting January 1, 2025 for some vehicles.
If your truck’s registration renews after that date, your deadline is based on that renewal schedule. You’ll need to complete the test and submit results before your registration comes up, or the DMV will block the renewal. CARB sends notices to registered owners, but it’s your responsibility to make sure the test gets done on time.
You can submit a passing test up to 90 days before your deadline. That gives you a three-month window to schedule the test, handle any repairs if your truck doesn’t pass, and get everything squared away with CARB before the DMV takes action. Don’t wait until the last minute. Registration holds are already being placed on non-compliant vehicles, and once that happens, you’re stuck until you get tested and prove compliance.
