Your truck stays registered. Your business keeps moving. That’s what happens when you get your Clean Truck Check done before CARB or the DMV flags your vehicle.
Starting January 2025, California requires emissions compliance testing for all heavy-duty trucks model year 2013 or newer with a GVWR over 14,000 pounds. Miss your deadline and you’re looking at registration holds that stop you from renewing. Fail to comply altogether and fines can hit $10,000 per vehicle per day.
We’re CARB credentialed testers right here in El Monte. We run the OBD scan, submit your results to the CTC-VIS system, and make sure you’re clear before your compliance deadline. You get a passing certificate, your truck stays legal, and you avoid the chaos of last-minute scrambling or enforcement action.
This isn’t about checking a box. It’s about protecting your livelihood and keeping your operation running without interruption.
We’ve been serving El Monte and the San Gabriel Valley for years. We know this area—the trucking routes, the port runs, the tight schedules. We also know CARB regulations inside and out.
We’re not just another smog shop trying to add services. We’re CARB credentialed testers using certified equipment to perform Clean Truck Check testing exactly how the state requires it. That means your results get accepted the first time, uploaded correctly, and processed without delays.
El Monte sits at the center of Southern California’s logistics network. With over 795 carriers operating in this area, you need a testing provider who understands the urgency and gets it done right. That’s what we do.
First, we verify your truck qualifies. Clean Truck Check applies only to vehicles model year 2013 or newer with a GVWR over 14,000 pounds. If your truck fits, we move forward.
Next, we connect to your truck’s OBD system using CARB-certified testing equipment. We pull the emissions data directly from your engine’s computer. The scan checks for fault codes, monitors emission control systems, and confirms everything is operating within California’s standards. This usually takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on the vehicle.
If your truck passes, we submit the results directly to CARB’s CTC-VIS system that same day. You’ll get a compliance certificate, and the state updates your record. If there’s an issue, we’ll tell you exactly what needs repair and help you understand your timeline. You’ve got 30 days to fix it and retest if needed.
The whole process is straightforward. You’re not waiting weeks for results or wondering if something got filed correctly. We handle the testing, the upload, and the documentation so you can get back on the road with proof of compliance in hand.
Ready to get started?
You’re getting a full CARB HD I/M emissions compliance test performed by a credentialed tester. That includes the OBD scan, data analysis, results submission to CTC-VIS, and your official compliance certificate if you pass.
This service is required for semi trucks, commercial freight vehicles, buses, and other heavy-duty diesel trucks operating in California. If your vehicle is subject to semi-annual testing, you’ll need this done every six months. Annual compliance vehicles get tested once a year. Your specific deadline is in your CTC-VIS account.
Here in El Monte, most of our clients are owner-operators, small fleet managers, or drivers working port routes and freight corridors. The compliance deadlines are real, and the consequences for missing them are expensive. A registration hold means you can’t renew your plates. Operating without compliance can mean getting flagged at weigh stations, denied entry to terminals, or hit with daily penalties.
We also know the 90-day window matters. You can submit a passing test up to 90 days before your deadline, which gives you breathing room if repairs are needed. We’ll walk you through your timeline and make sure you’re covered before it becomes a problem.
Your truck needs this test if it’s model year 2013 or newer and has a GVWR over 14,000 pounds. That’s the state’s requirement—not ours.
If your truck is older than 2013 or weighs less than 14,000 pounds, this regulation doesn’t apply to you. But if you’re running a newer heavy-duty diesel or alternative fuel truck in California, you’re subject to CARB’s emissions compliance testing program. That includes semi trucks, box trucks, dump trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles in that weight class.
The testing frequency depends on your vehicle. Some trucks are subject to annual compliance, others are semi-annual. You can check your specific deadline by logging into your CTC-VIS account on CARB’s website. If you’re not sure whether your truck qualifies or when your deadline is, bring your registration and we’ll help you figure it out.
If your truck fails, you’ve got 30 days to get it repaired and retested. CARB gives you that window to fix whatever triggered the failure and come back for another scan.
Most failures happen because of fault codes in the OBD system—things like a malfunctioning sensor, an emissions control component that’s not working right, or a check engine light that’s been ignored. We’ll tell you exactly what the system flagged so you know what needs attention.
Once repairs are done, you come back and we retest. If it passes the second time, we submit the results and you’re compliant. If you don’t retest within 30 days, you risk a registration hold and potential fines. The key is acting fast and getting the repairs handled by someone who knows heavy-duty diesel systems. We can point you toward qualified mechanics if you need a referral.
The actual test takes 15 to 30 minutes in most cases. You’re not sitting here all day.
We plug into your truck’s OBD port, run the scan, and pull the emissions data. If everything checks out, we submit your results to CARB’s system that same day and hand you the compliance certificate. You’re done.
If there’s a problem—like the OBD system isn’t communicating or there are fault codes—it might take a bit longer to diagnose what’s going on. But even then, you’ll know before you leave what the issue is and what needs to happen next. We don’t drag things out or leave you guessing. You’ll have a clear answer and a timeline before you walk out the door.
You can test up to 90 days before your compliance deadline. In fact, testing early is smart.
If you pass, your results get submitted and you’re covered. If you fail, you’ve got time to make repairs and retest without the pressure of a looming deadline. Waiting until the last minute means you’re gambling that everything will pass on the first try—and if it doesn’t, you’re racing the clock to avoid a registration hold.
A lot of our clients in El Monte test a month or two early, especially if they’re running tight schedules or can’t afford downtime. It’s a simple way to stay ahead of CARB’s enforcement and avoid the stress of wondering whether your registration will go through. Check your CTC-VIS account for your exact deadline, then schedule your test with enough buffer to handle any surprises.
A regular smog check is for passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks under 14,000 pounds. Clean Truck Check is specifically for heavy-duty vehicles—trucks over 14,000 pounds GVWR, model year 2013 or newer.
The testing process is different too. Clean Truck Check uses OBD-based emissions testing, which means we’re scanning your engine’s computer for fault codes and emissions data. We’re not doing a tailpipe test. The equipment is different, the certification is different, and the reporting system is different. Results go directly into CARB’s CTC-VIS database, not the regular smog check system.
You can’t just go to any smog shop for this. You need a CARB credentialed tester who’s trained and certified to perform Clean Truck Check testing with the right equipment. That’s what we are. If someone tells you they can do a “smog test” on your semi truck, make sure they’re actually credentialed for Clean Truck Check—otherwise your results won’t be accepted and you’ll have wasted your time and money.
If you miss your deadline, CARB can place a registration hold on your vehicle. That means the DMV won’t let you renew your registration until you’re compliant.
A registration hold isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s a business killer. You can’t legally operate the truck until the hold is lifted, which only happens after you pass the test and CARB updates your record. Even then, it takes 3 to 5 business days for the DMV to process the update.
On top of that, operating a non-compliant truck can result in fines up to $10,000 per vehicle per day. You can also get flagged at weigh stations, denied access to ports or freight terminals, and face other enforcement actions. The penalties are real and they add up fast. The cost of the test is a fraction of what you’ll pay if you ignore the requirement. Get it done on time, stay legal, and keep your trucks working.
