CARB Diesel Compliance in Avocado Heights

Keep Your Trucks Running, Your Registration Clear

You’re not looking for a lecture on California CARB regulations. You need to know your truck will pass, your results get submitted correctly, and you won’t deal with a DMV registration hold that puts your vehicle out of commission.

That’s what happens here. If your truck is model year 2013 or newer and weighs over 14,000 pounds GVWR, you’re required to get tested twice a year under CARB’s Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance program. Miss a deadline or fail to submit results, and you’re looking at fines up to $10,000 per vehicle per day. Not to mention the registration block that stops you from operating legally.

We use CARB-certified OBD testing devices and submit your results directly to the state database. You get documentation. You stay compliant. And if you’re ahead of schedule, you can test up to 90 days before your deadline and still meet the requirement.

CARB Certified Smog Check Experts

We Know Heavy-Duty Compliance Because We Do It Daily

All SMOG Motors serves truck operators throughout Avocado Heights and the surrounding Los Angeles County area. We’re CARB credentialed testers, which means we’ve completed the official training and certification required to perform Clean Truck Check testing on 2013 and newer diesel engines.

This isn’t a side service we added because it’s trendy. It’s what we’re trained and equipped to do. Avocado Heights sits right in the middle of major freight corridors, so we understand the pressure you’re under to stay on the road and avoid downtime.

You’re dealing with tight schedules, fluctuating fuel costs, and now mandatory semi-annual emissions testing. We get it. That’s why we focus on getting you in, tested, and back on the road without the runaround.

How Clean Truck Check Testing Works

Here's What Happens When You Come In

First, we confirm your truck qualifies. That means it’s a 2013 or newer model year, non-gasoline powered, and has a gross vehicle weight rating over 14,000 pounds. If it doesn’t meet those specs, this test doesn’t apply to you.

Once we verify eligibility, we connect a CARB-certified OBD testing device to your truck’s onboard diagnostics system. The device reads emission-related data directly from your engine control module. We’re checking for fault codes, system readiness, and whether your emissions controls are functioning as designed.

If your truck passes, we submit the results electronically to CARB’s database on your behalf. You’ll receive documentation showing your test date and pass status. That’s what keeps your registration active and your truck legal to operate in California.

If there’s a failure, we’ll explain what triggered it. Sometimes it’s a sensor issue. Sometimes it’s a more significant emissions system problem. Either way, you’ll know exactly what needs attention before you retest.

Heavy-Duty Vehicle Compliance in Avocado Heights, CA

What's Included in Your Clean Truck Check

You’re getting a full CARB HD I/M test performed by a credentialed tester using state-approved equipment. That includes the OBD scan, results interpretation, and electronic submission to the California Air Resources Board database.

Here in Los Angeles County, the stakes are higher because enforcement is tighter. You’ve got CHP doing roadside inspections. You’ve got ports and freight terminals checking compliance before they let you through the gate. And if your registration gets flagged, the DMV won’t renew it until you submit a passing test.

The testing window is semi-annual for most operators, but if your truck is used exclusively out of state and only operates in California occasionally, different rules might apply. Either way, you need documentation proving compliance. We handle that part.

One thing to note: you can test early. CARB allows you to submit a passing result up to 90 days before your deadline. If you’ve got a slow season or downtime coming up, that’s your window to get ahead of it and avoid the last-minute scramble.

Does my semi truck need a Clean Truck Check in California?

If your truck is model year 2013 or newer, weighs more than 14,000 pounds GVWR, and runs on diesel or an alternative fuel, then yes. This applies whether you’re California-registered or coming in from out of state.

The program is mandatory under Senate Bill 210 and CARB’s Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance regulation. It went into effect October 1, 2024, and all compliance deadlines on or after January 1, 2025, require a passing emissions test.

Gasoline-powered trucks are exempt. So are trucks older than 2013. But if you’re running a newer diesel rig in California, this isn’t optional. You’ll need to test every six months to keep your registration active and avoid penalties.

Most operators need testing every six months. Your specific deadline depends on your vehicle’s registration renewal date and when your last test was submitted.

CARB sets your testing schedule based on your truck’s registration cycle. If you’re operating in California regularly, plan on twice a year. If you’re an out-of-state operator who only comes through occasionally, the rules are a bit different, but you still need proof of compliance.

Starting in October 2027, the frequency increases to quarterly for certain vehicles. That’s still a few years out, but it’s worth knowing now so you can plan accordingly. For now, semi-annual testing is the standard, and you can submit a passing test up to 90 days early if that helps with your schedule.

If your truck fails, you’ll get a detailed report showing which emissions system triggered the failure. Common issues include faulty oxygen sensors, diesel particulate filter problems, or malfunctioning exhaust gas recirculation systems.

You’ll need to get the issue repaired and then retest. The failure itself doesn’t result in an immediate fine, but operating without a passing test on file does. That’s where the penalties kick in—up to $10,000 per vehicle per day.

The DMV will also place a registration hold on your vehicle if you don’t submit a passing test by your deadline. That means you can’t renew your registration, and technically, you can’t legally operate the truck in California until you’re compliant. Get it fixed, get it retested, and get the results submitted. That’s the only way to clear the hold.

Yes. CARB allows you to submit a passing test up to 90 days before your compliance deadline. This is actually a smart move if you’ve got downtime or a lighter schedule coming up.

Testing early gives you a cushion. If something fails, you’ve got time to make repairs and retest without the pressure of a looming deadline. If you pass, your results get submitted to the state database immediately, and you’re covered.

Just keep in mind that the 90-day window only applies to passing tests. If you test early and fail, you’ll still need to fix the issue and retest, but at least you’ll know what you’re dealing with ahead of time instead of finding out the day before your registration expires.

We do. As CARB credentialed testers, we’re authorized to submit your results directly to the state’s electronic database. You don’t have to mail anything in or log into a portal yourself.

Once your truck passes, we transmit the data to CARB on your behalf. You’ll receive documentation showing your test date, pass status, and submission confirmation. That’s your proof of compliance if you get stopped at a roadside inspection or need to show documentation at a port or terminal.

If you’re an out-of-state operator, the process is the same. We test your truck, submit the results, and you get the paperwork. CARB tracks everything by VIN, so even if your truck isn’t California-registered, the system logs your compliance as long as you’re operating here.

You still need to comply if your truck meets the weight and model year requirements. CARB doesn’t exempt out-of-state operators just because you’re not here full-time.

If you’re coming into California for a job, a delivery, or any commercial operation, your truck needs a passing Clean Truck Check on file. Enforcement happens at weigh stations, ports, and during roadside inspections. If you can’t show proof of compliance, you’re subject to the same penalties as California-based operators.

The good news is that once you test and pass, that result stays in the CARB database. So if you’re only in California a few times a year, you won’t necessarily need to test every six months. But you do need a valid test on file whenever you’re operating here. Plan ahead, test before you cross the state line, and keep your documentation handy.
