If you’re running heavy-duty trucks with a GVWR over 14,000 pounds in California, you already know CARB compliance isn’t optional anymore. As of January 2025, the Clean Truck Check program requires emissions testing for diesel trucks model year 2013 or newer. Miss your 30-day deadline and you’re looking at DMV registration holds and fines that can hit $10,000 per vehicle per day.
That’s not a scare tactic. That’s the reality of operating in California now.
What you need is someone who can test your trucks without pulling them off the road for half a day. You need results uploaded to the state system immediately so your registration doesn’t get flagged. And you need it done by someone who actually knows what they’re doing with OBD diagnostics on 2013+ diesel engines.
We bring CARB-certified testing directly to your location in Indio. Your driver doesn’t lose a route. Your truck doesn’t sit in a bay somewhere. You get a compliance certificate, the state gets updated through CTC-VIS, and you get back to work.
All SMOG Motors has been handling emissions testing in the Coachella Valley for nearly two decades. We’re not new to diesel. We’re not new to CARB regulations. And we’re definitely not new to the kinds of trucks running through Indio—whether you’re hauling produce, servicing events like Coachella, or moving freight through the I-10 corridor.
We’re licensed under California’s Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance program. Our equipment is CARB-approved. Our testers are certified. We carry $2M in liability coverage because this work matters and we take it seriously.
Indio sits at the center of a logistics-heavy region. Agriculture, tourism, distribution—your trucks don’t stop, and neither does the compliance calendar. We built our mobile testing service specifically for operators who can’t afford downtime and don’t have time to figure out CARB’s rulebook on their own.
First, we confirm your truck qualifies. That means it’s model year 2013 or newer and has a GVWR over 14,000 pounds. If it doesn’t meet both of those criteria, this program doesn’t apply to you yet.
Once we’re scheduled, we come to your yard, depot, or job site in Indio. We connect to your truck’s OBD system using the J1937 or J1979 diagnostic port—this is a plug-in test, not a tailpipe sniffer. The system pulls emissions data directly from your engine’s computer.
The test takes about 20 minutes if everything’s running clean. If your truck passes, we generate your compliance certificate on the spot and upload your results to the state’s CTC-VIS database. That update removes any DMV hold and satisfies your Clean Truck Check requirement.
If something flags, we’ll tell you exactly what the issue is. You’ll know whether it’s a sensor, a regen problem, or something more involved. From there, you can get it handled and we’ll retest once repairs are done. No guessing. No runaround.

This isn’t just a smog check. It’s CARB-mandated heavy-duty diesel compliance testing under California’s HD I/M program. You’re required to test semi-annually once you receive a notice from the state. That notice gives you 30 days to comply.
Our mobile service covers all diesel trucks model year 2013 or newer with a GVWR above 14,000 pounds. That includes semi trucks, box trucks, delivery trucks, and anything else in that weight class running a diesel engine with an OBD-compliant emissions system.
We handle the $31.18 annual compliance fee payment as part of the process. We register your vehicle in the CTC-VIS system if it’s not already in there. And we make sure your test results get uploaded the same day so there’s no delay on your end.
Indio’s economy runs on logistics. Whether you’re moving dates from the valley, setting up for festival season, or running long-haul routes, your trucks are your business. We’re here to keep them compliant without slowing them down. You don’t need to understand every line of CARB’s regulation—you just need to pass the test and keep moving.
No. Right now, the Clean Truck Check program only applies to heavy-duty diesel trucks that are model year 2013 or newer. If your truck was built before 2013, you’re not subject to this testing requirement yet.
That said, CARB has a history of expanding regulations over time. It’s possible that older trucks will eventually be added to the program, but as of 2025, the cutoff is firm. If you’re running a mixed fleet, only your 2013+ trucks need testing.
Also, the truck has to have a GVWR over 14,000 pounds. Lighter trucks—even if they’re diesel and newer than 2013—aren’t part of this program. Both conditions have to be true: 2013 or newer AND over 14,000 pounds.
If your truck fails, you’ll get a detailed report showing exactly what triggered the failure. Most failures come from sensor issues, incomplete regeneration cycles, or fault codes stored in the engine’s computer.
You’ll need to get the issue repaired before you can retest. We don’t do the repairs ourselves, but we’ll tell you what the problem is so you can take it to your mechanic with clear information. Once the repair is done, we’ll come back and retest.
You still have to meet that original 30-day deadline from when the state sent your notice. If you’re cutting it close, get the truck looked at immediately. Waiting until day 29 to find out you’ve got a problem doesn’t leave much room to fix it and retest. The state doesn’t extend deadlines, and penalties start accruing the day after your window closes.
We come to you. That’s the whole point of our mobile service. Whether you’re at a yard in downtown Indio, a depot near the 10, or a job site out in Thermal, we’ll meet you there.
You don’t need a shop or a bay. We just need access to the truck and about 20 minutes of time. Most operators schedule us during a shift change, at the end of a route, or during routine maintenance windows so there’s zero disruption.
Mobile testing saves you time and keeps your trucks in service. Driving to a test facility, waiting in line, and driving back can eat up half a day. We eliminate all of that. You stay on schedule, and your truck stays compliant.
Pricing depends on how many trucks you’re testing and whether you need ongoing service or a one-time test. The state charges a $31.18 annual compliance fee, which we handle as part of the process.
Our testing fee covers the mobile service, the OBD diagnostics, the compliance certificate, and the upload to CTC-VIS. We’re not the cheapest option out there, and that’s intentional. You’re paying for certified testers, CARB-approved equipment, same-day reporting, and a service that doesn’t waste your time.
If you’re running a fleet, we can set up a testing schedule that keeps you ahead of deadlines and spreads the cost across the year. Most operators in Indio with multiple trucks prefer that approach because it’s predictable and keeps compliance off their plate. Call us for a quote based on your fleet size and testing frequency.
CARB sends a notice to the registered owner of the vehicle. That notice will tell you that your truck is due for a Clean Truck Check and give you 30 days to complete the test.
If you miss that notice or ignore it, the next thing that happens is a DMV registration hold. You won’t be able to renew your registration until you complete the test and get your results uploaded to the state system.
Some operators don’t realize they’ve been flagged until they try to renew and get blocked. If you’re not sure whether your truck is due, we can check the CTC-VIS system for you. It’s better to stay ahead of it than to find out the hard way when your registration is on hold and your truck is grounded.
A regular smog check is what you get for passenger cars and light-duty trucks under 14,000 pounds. It usually involves a tailpipe test and a visual inspection. That’s not what this is.
The Clean Truck Check is a heavy-duty diesel emissions test that uses OBD diagnostics. We plug into your truck’s computer and pull data directly from the emissions control system. It’s checking for fault codes, sensor performance, and whether your diesel particulate filter and other emissions equipment are working correctly.
This test is required under California’s HD I/M program, which is separate from the smog check program most people are familiar with. It only applies to heavy-duty trucks model year 2013 or newer with a GVWR over 14,000 pounds. The results get reported to CARB through the CTC-VIS system, not the regular smog check database. Different program, different rules, different equipment.
