You’re running a business, and every day a truck sits idle costs you money. California’s CARB regulations aren’t optional, and if you’re not compliant, the DMV puts a hold on your registration. That means your truck doesn’t move until you fix it.
We handle CARB emissions testing for heavy-duty diesel trucks—model year 2013 or newer with a GVWR over 14,000 pounds. That’s the state requirement, and that’s what we test. If your truck falls outside those specs, this service doesn’t apply.
Our testing is mobile. We come to your location in Alhambra or nearby, run the OBD check, and upload results directly to California’s CTC-VIS system. You get confirmation the same day. No waiting weeks to find out if you passed. No wondering if the DMV got the paperwork.
If you’re dealing with a compliance deadline or already have a registration hold, you need this handled now. We get that. Fast turnaround matters when your livelihood depends on keeping trucks moving.
All SMOG Motors has been serving Alhambra and the San Gabriel Valley since 2005. We’re CARB credentialed testers—that’s not optional, it’s required by the state. Only credentialed testers can submit valid results to the CTC-VIS portal, and we’ve been doing it since the program started.
Alhambra sits right in the middle of Southern California’s freight corridors. The I-10 and I-710 run through here, which means heavy-duty trucks are everywhere. Construction contractors, warehouse operators, produce distributors—they all need CARB compliance, and they all need it done right the first time.
We’re not a general smog shop trying to figure out heavy-duty compliance on the side. This is what we do. We understand the regulations, the deadlines, the consequences of missing them, and how to get you compliant without the runaround.
You contact us and tell us where your truck is located. We schedule a time that works for you—same-day service is available if you’re in a bind.
We show up with the equipment needed to run an OBD test on your 2013 or newer diesel truck. The OBD system in your truck monitors emissions in real time, so the test is fast. We plug in, pull the data, and check for any fault codes or readiness issues that would cause a failure.
If your truck passes, we upload the results to CARB’s CTC-VIS portal immediately. The state gets the data, your compliance status updates, and any DMV registration hold gets cleared. You’ll see confirmation in the system within hours, not days.
If your truck doesn’t pass, we tell you exactly why and what needs to be fixed. You get 50% off the retest once repairs are done. We’re not here to milk you for multiple test fees—we want you compliant and back to work.
You also need to pay the annual compliance fee to the state, which is separate from our testing fee. For 2025, that’s $31.18. It’s required, and it’s paid directly to CARB, not to us. We’ll help you navigate the CTC-VIS portal if you’re not familiar with it.

California’s CARB clean truck check program applies to nearly all diesel and alternative fuel vehicles over 14,000 pounds operating in the state. If your truck is model year 2013 or newer, you need an OBD test. Older trucks require smoke opacity testing, which is a different process—and not something we handle.
For 2024, you’re required to test once. Starting in 2025, testing moves to semiannual deadlines—that means every six months. The state sends notices through the CTC-VIS portal, so you need to be registered there and checking it regularly.
If you ignore the deadline, the DMV places a registration hold on your vehicle. You can’t renew registration, and if you’re pulled over, you’re looking at fines up to $10,000 per year for operating a non-compliant vehicle. That’s not a scare tactic—that’s what the law allows.
Alhambra’s location makes compliance even more critical. You’re near major distribution hubs, and enforcement is active in high-traffic freight areas. A Notice to Submit to Testing gives you 30 days to respond. Miss that window, and your truck is off the road until you comply.
We also work with fleet operators who need multiple trucks tested. If you’re managing a fleet in Alhambra, we can coordinate testing schedules to minimize disruption. Mobile service means we come to your yard, not the other way around.
Only heavy-duty trucks that are model year 2013 or newer and have a gross vehicle weight rating over 14,000 pounds qualify for the OBD-based CARB emissions testing we provide. This includes semi trucks, box trucks, delivery trucks, and other commercial diesel vehicles that meet those specs.
If your truck is older than 2013, it requires smoke opacity testing instead of OBD testing. That’s a different process, and it’s not something we offer. The state draws a hard line at 2013 because that’s when OBD systems became standard on heavy-duty diesel engines.
If your truck is under 14,000 pounds GVWR, it falls under standard smog check requirements, not CARB’s heavy-duty compliance program. Make sure you know your truck’s model year and GVWR before booking—those two factors determine whether this service applies to you.
The actual OBD test takes about 15 to 30 minutes once we’re on-site with your truck. We plug into the OBD port, pull emissions data, and check for fault codes or readiness monitors that aren’t set. It’s a straightforward process for 2013 and newer diesel trucks.
What takes longer is scheduling and travel time, especially if you’re in a busy part of Alhambra or need us to come during peak hours. We offer same-day service when possible, but booking ahead gives you more flexibility.
After the test, results go straight to CARB’s system. You’ll see your compliance status update within a few hours. If there’s a DMV registration hold, it clears once CARB processes the passing result. That usually happens the same day, but the DMV’s system can take up to 24 hours to reflect the change.
If your truck fails, we tell you exactly what triggered the failure. Common issues include fault codes related to emissions controls, incomplete readiness monitors, or a check engine light that’s been ignored. The OBD system tracks all of this, so there’s no mystery.
You’ll need to get the issue repaired before retesting. We don’t do repairs—we only do testing—but we can point you toward what needs fixing. Once repairs are done, contact us for a retest. You get 50% off the retest fee, so you’re not paying full price twice.
A failed test doesn’t get reported to CARB as a compliance event, so you’re not penalized just for testing and failing. But you do need to retest and pass before your deadline, or the DMV will place a registration hold. Don’t wait until the last minute to test, because if you fail, you’ll need time to make repairs and retest before the deadline hits.
Yes. California requires all heavy-duty vehicle owners to register in the CTC-VIS portal before testing. That’s where the state tracks compliance, sends deadline notices, and processes your annual compliance fee. If you’re not registered, you can’t submit test results, and you can’t stay compliant.
Registration is free, but it’s not intuitive if you’ve never done it before. You’ll need your vehicle identification number, license plate, and some basic information about your truck. The state uses this to match your test results to your vehicle record.
We offer free assistance with CTC-VIS registration if you’re stuck. A lot of truck owners in Alhambra aren’t familiar with the portal because the program is relatively new. We’ve walked dozens of people through it, and we’re happy to help you get set up so testing goes smoothly.
Our testing fee covers the mobile service, the OBD test, and immediate upload of results to CARB’s system. Pricing depends on your location within Alhambra and whether you need same-day service. Contact us for an exact quote based on your situation.
Separately, you’ll pay an annual compliance fee directly to the state through the CTC-VIS portal. For 2025, that fee is $31.18. It’s required by law, and it’s not something we collect—it goes straight to CARB. The fee adjusts each year based on California’s Consumer Price Index.
If your truck fails and you need a retest, you get 50% off our testing fee for the second test. We’re not here to charge you multiple times for the same service. One test, one fee. If repairs are needed, that’s a separate cost, and we don’t handle repairs—only testing.
If your truck operates in California, it’s subject to CARB compliance regardless of where it’s registered. Out-of-state trucks that spend significant time in California—especially those running freight routes through Alhambra and the I-10 or I-710 corridors—are required to comply with the state’s heavy-duty vehicle regulations.
You’ll still need to register in the CTC-VIS portal and submit to testing. The state doesn’t care where your plates are from—if you’re operating here, you’re subject to the rules. Enforcement is active, and out-of-state operators get pulled over just like California-registered trucks.
We can test your truck as long as it meets the criteria: model year 2013 or newer, GVWR over 14,000 pounds, and equipped with an OBD system. Contact us with your VIN and registration details, and we’ll confirm whether your truck qualifies and walk you through the compliance process.
